Our History

The vast, energetic campus of Atlanta Medical Center began in 1901 in a five-room cottage. It had one doctor, a few church women as nurses and two patients. The facility now houses more than 700 staff physicians, 460 patient beds, specialty centers that cover virtually every aspect of modern medicine, and seven successful residency programs.

Office space for medical professionals became part of the campus in 1956, and new facilities are constantly being added. LifeFlight, an aeromedical transport system for trauma victims, began in 1981.

The aggressive recruitment of quality residents, further development of oncology, cardiology, orthopaedics, neurosciences and rehabilitation represent Atlanta Medical Center's solid history and a shining future.

From its beginnings nearly a century ago through its energetic development to the massive campus of today, Atlanta Medical Center has remained sharply focused on teaching. Learning opportunities for residents abound.

Study is vigorous, but the resident's inner life is not neglected. There are excellent recreational facilities on campus at the Highland Athletic Club, where residents have free use of indoor track and swimming pool, treadmills, Airdyne bicycles, aerobic classes, and Universal and free weights.

The primary mission of the Atlanta Medical Center Residency Training Program is to produce talented, creative and dedicated physicians. At Atlanta Medical Center we care deeply about the resident and it shows.

Directions to the Hospital

From Interstate 75/85 South

• Take Exit 248C to the right and continue across the Interstate to the first traffic light (Boulevard NE)
• Turn left onto Boulevard
• Turn left onto Highland
• Turn left onto Parkway and the hospital is straight ahead.

From Interstate 75/85 North

• Take Exit 248C (Highway 10 East/Carter Center) to the right.
• Turn left onto Highland.
• Turn right onto Parkway and the hospital is straight ahead.

From Interstate 20 East and West

• Take Interstate 75/85 North to Exit 248C (Highway 10 East/Carter Center) and exit to the right.
• Bear right and continue to the traffic light at Boulevard.
• Turn left onto Boulevard.
• Turn left onto Highland.
• Turn left onto Parkway and the hospital is straight ahead.

From MARTA East-West Line

• Take the MARTA train to station E2 - King Memorial.
• Bus #99 leaves the station every 40 to 50 minutes and stops in front of the hospital on Boulevard NE.
• Bus #99 also returns from the hospital to King Memorial. This bus picks up riders on the hospital side of Boulevard NE.
• This trip takes 6-10 minutes each way.

From MARTA North-South Line

• Take the MARTA train to station N3 - North Avenue.
• Bus #99 leaves the station every 40 to 50 minutes and stops in front of the hospital on Boulevard NE.
• Bus #99 also returns from the hospital to North Avenue. This bus picks up riders across the street from the Emergency entrance at Boulevard NE and East Avenue.
• This trip takes 6-10 minutes each way.
