Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program
Residents in the Orthopaedic Surgery Program at Atlanta Medical Center are exposed to all phases of adult and pediatric orthopaedics including research, the hand and upper extremity, foot and ankle, sports medicine, total joint replacement, trauma, spine, rehabilitation, orthopaedic anatomy and pathology, and relevant basic sciences.
The Othopaedic Residency Program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and directed by Steven M. Kane, MD Chairman/Program Director. The Orthopaedic Residency Program Research Director is Timothy Ganey, PhD. In the fall of 2009, the program opened a learning center and surgical laboratory as a complement to our research facilities here at the Atlanta Medical Center. Research facilities at Emory University and Georgia State University are utilized by the program as well. Residents are expected to present a summary of their research at the King Day Lecture Series, annually. Several recent resident projects have won state, regional, and national awards.
About the Program
The orthopaedic residency program at the Atlanta Medical Center offers interns and residents in training a comprehensive education program in all areas of orthopaedic surgery. The faculty has been carefully selected for their dedication to resident education and commitment to the standards and ideals of the program. Rotations are conducted at the Atlanta Medical Center as well as at a number of outside facilities in Atlanta giving the residents a complete experience in both academic and private practice orthopaedics. During their training at the Atlanta Medical Center, orthopaedic residents will rotate with a number of nationally recognized specialists and are exposed to the contemporary methods of diagnosis and treatment in the field of orthopaedic surgery.
Research Capabilities
The Atlanta Medical Center is committed to conducting and publishing meaningful research, which both fulfills the requirements for program accreditation as well as to improve the understanding of orthopaedics within the faculty and residents. The residency program opened the cadaveric surgical skills laboratory as well as a biocellular research center in September 2009. This laboratory enables residents to both improve their arthroscopic surgical skills as well as to conduct research into both anatomical and biocellular fields of study. Additionally, AMC is partnered with the orthopaedic residency at Emory University for research purposes and shares with Emory the biomechanical research facilities present at their institution. Finally, AMC has partnered with Georgia State University for research and educational opportunities in Orthopaedics.
Applications
The Atlanta Medical Center’s Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program requirements are as follows; you must apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service and a minimum of three letters of recommendation are required. Atlanta Medical Center’s Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Programs application deadline is November 15th of each year. The Orthopaedic Selection Committee schedules interview dates in December, January & February.
