An orthopaedic senior elective clerkship is offered by the Department of Orthopaedics at Atlanta Medical Center to provide senior medical students a four-week rotation with extensive exposure to general and subspecialty orthopaedic surgery. The senior clerkship is divided as follows:
- Two weeks at Atlanta Medical where the student is exposed to general orthopaedics in the resident and private attending outpatient clinics as well as orthopaedic trauma in the trauma bay and emergency room.
- One week at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite participating in the care of pediatric orthopedic patients.
- One rotating week with exposure to sports medicine, hand surgery, foot and ankle surgery and/or spine surgery depending on availability and student interest.
- At all locations exposure to the operating room and inclusion in surgery is a priority during the senior elective clerkship
Medical students remain under the guidance of the resident with whom they are rotating, the administrative chief orthopaedic resident, and our program director, Dr. Daniel Schlatterer.
At the end of the four weeks, the students are asked to present a selected lecture topic to the faculty, residents and fellow rotating students at a Friday afternoon teaching conference.
Students receive evaluations with regard to the quality of their participation, professionalism, willingness to learn and the quality of their presentations.
Medical students interested in the senior elective program in orthopaedics must be in their fourth year. Senior elective rotation is for one month. Six months are set aside for senior elective rotation in the Orthopaedics Program at Atlanta Medical Center, which begins July 1st and ends December 31st of each year.
Students interested in the senior elective program in orthopaedic surgery at AMC should download the application as well as provide the necessary requirements which includes: (1) a letter from your medical school approving a rotation at Atlanta Medical Center; (2) a copy of your medical school malpractice insurance information regarding students accepting elective clerkships at other institutions; (3) a copy of your immunization records; (4) two letters of recommendation; and, (5) a copy of your transcript from your medical school.
