Atlanta Medical Center's Bloodless Medicine and Surgery program offers blood conservation services and a coordinator 24-hours a day. Services include: physician referrals, assistance with outpatient services, scheduling, information for family member accommodations, and out-of-town lodging.
Along with a skilled medical and professional staff, meeting the challenge of bloodless medicine and surgery requires specific technology. The following technology is available at Atlanta Medical Center: Cell Saver-continually circulates the patient's own blood during surgical procedures, skin Monitor-Tracks oxygen levels during surgery, Argon Beam Coagulator-Coagulates or clots a patient's blood during surgery in order to reduce blood loss, Volume expanders-Intravenous fluids that enhance the circulation of a patient's own blood during surgery, Synthetic Erythropoietin-stimulates bone marrow to produce red blood cells, Lasers-for treatment of a variety of surgical disorders, Harmonic Scalpel-A device used to control bleeding. "Bloodless" means medical or surgical treatment without the use of banked (stored) allogenic blood or primary blood components. Blood loss often occurs during surgery. A bloodless program endeavors to minimize blood loss by utilizing special blood conservation methods.
